We have hard water and it got scaled often even using filtered water. I would soak the bottom in vinegar to clear it but i think that may have been what shorted it out eventually. I've used plastic kettles for years so that wasn't an issue though now that so many stainless steel models are available, i may go that route. My old kettle was a melitta and lasted about seven years so i may look into another one. I would not buy another one of these. .
